ERC Student Retreat - Washington DC - 11/02/2002

MCEER SLC Chair, Jeff Berman and SLC Member Michael Pollino represented the MCEER SLC at the 2003 ERC Student Retreat in Washington, D.C., on November 1st.  The activities of the day included a welcome by Lynn Preston (Deputy Director and Leader of the ERC Team, Division of Engineering Education and Centers, Directorate for Engineering, National Science Foundation), followed by moderated discussions on topics related to ERC SLCs.  The topics included:

  • Effective Communication between Multi-Institutional ERCs

  • Commercializing, Patenting, and Licensing of Technology: A Discussion on How to Include Students in the Process

  • ERC/Industry Collaboration: Maintaining Strong Interactions with Industrial Partners

  • How to Run a Successful SLC Outreach Program

  • Securing Summer and Full-Time Employment through ERCs

There was also an interesting round table discussion on recruiting students into the ERCs and SLCs.  Mike and Jeff will put some of the ideas and strategies learned here to work within the MCEER SLC.  Following the long day of discussions, a reception was hosted by NSF.  They also met individually with members of MAE and PEER to coordinate future tri-center activities.
