2005 REU Symposium held in Reno, Nevada

The 2005 Annual Tri-Center Earthquake Engineering Symposium for Young Researchers was held August 11-14 in Reno, Nevada.  Twenty-two undergraduate students, sponsored by MCEER, PEER, and MAE, presented on the research each conducted during this 10-week summer research project.  This year’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) event was organized by MAE, and included the following host institutions: University at Buffalo, University of California at Los Angeles, University of California at Berkeley, Georgia Institute of Technology, Washington University, Stanford University, University of Memphis, and MAE.  The students’ home universities ranged across the US:  from Florida to California, New York to Oregon, Texas to Michigan, South Carolina to Arizona, and Illinois to Mississippi.

The Symposium also incorporated tours of the Nevada Seismological Lab and the NEES Equipment Site both at the University of Nevada, Reno.  The visit to the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering provided the students with the opportunity to see a successful retrofit project of a building that underwent a five-year, $10M seismic retrofit.  The building was jacked from the ground, a moat was dug to separate the building from the ground, and then the building was lowered onto 44 Teflon slider plates and 64 base isolation columns.  The students then experienced the engineering lab and shake table, while testing was taking place.  In addition, Dr. Charles Harris, a guest speaker, led a special activity focused on ethical considerations associated with engineering projects.

As part of the NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates Program, this effort affords undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct academic research on a project in conjunction with faculty and doctoral candidates at the host site.  Students frequently have the opportunity to work in state-of-the-art lab facilities and to use advanced computer technologies.  The REU program encourages these undergraduate engineering students to pursue graduate studies in their fields of interest, and to continue communicating with these faculty and students during their future academic and professional careers.

MCEER sponsored nine REU students this year.  Six of them completed their programs at UB: Kelly Doyle, from the University of Nevada, Reno; from Texas A&M, Elizabeth Goodwin; Charles Ekiert and David Keller both from UB; Tyler Ross from the University of Utah; and from Clarkson University, Richard Wood.  The three additional MCEER students remained at their home institutions for their programs: from Florida, Waleed Barnawi at Florida State University and Vicente Ruiz from Florida A&M, and Said Sadek from the City College of New York.  Both Waleed and Vicente had unique opportunities traveling to Japan for a portion of their research work.
