From the Editors: special issue announcement
We wish to sincerely thank Professor Li Jianzhong of Tongji University and Professor Ian Buckle of the University of Nevada at Reno, for acting as guest editors of our first special issue on the “Seismic Design and Retrofit of Highway Bridges.” These two well-known experts in the field have helped to provide ten papers on a variety of topics important in bridge engineering today.
Topics in this issue include: lessons and observations of bridge damage from the recent Wenchuan earthquake disaster, design procedures to help bridges withstand large tectonic deformation, development of fragility curves, investigations of the seismic performance of substructures including abutment and piers, applications of isolation bearings and semi-active control, and case study of structural health monitoring procedures.
We also thank the managing editors, Dr. Jianguo Xiong and Ms. Jane Stoyle, for their hard work and dedication in preparing the ten manuscripts in this issue for publication.
To commemorate the first anniversary of the Wenchuan earthquake, this journal plans to devote its second special issue to observations and lessons learned from this disaster in its June 2009 issue (Vol. 8, No. 2). Three guest editors will be announced in the near future. We invite you to contribute to this special issue by submitting a manuscript to either our Harbin or Buffalo office by March 15, 2009, with an indication “For 2009 Special Issue.”
The journal of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration will do its best to fulfill its role to facilitate the establishment of earthquake resilient communities throughout the world by rapidly transmitting your technical contributions to the earthquake engineering research and professional community.
