Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology Summer Course in Iceland
2013 brings another international graduate summer course offering in Iceland: Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology. The course deals with the nature and characteristics of strong earthquakes and their intense ground motions causing damage. Earthquake source processes, seismic wave propagation, wave amplification due to local site conditions, and structural response due to seismic waves are key elements. The course consists of: lectures, hands on projects and classroom-on-wheels, which is an educational field-trip that aims at participants experiencing first-hand the dynamic Icelandic nature with focus on earthquake zones and urban areas exposed to earthquake faults and earthquake strong-motion. The classroom-on-wheels will be a four-day trip, focusing on all aspects of earthquake engineering concern regarding the town of Husavik, North Iceland, that is located directly on the largest transform fault in Iceland. The course is tailor-made for civil engineering students but is also suited for mathematically oriented geoscience students.
- Application deadline: March 8, 2013
- Program dates: May 30-June 21, 2013
- Program Location: Selfoss, Iceland

7NSC Bridge Design Competition
This dynamic competition will emphasize the seismic design of a bridge for it to resist shaking from an earthquake simulating shaking table during the competition! The competition is intended for undergraduate engineering students teams from four and two year colleges. What is the design challenge? Design and construct a bridge as part of a new highway system to enhance the transportation network in the San Francisco Bay Area. The objective is to design the safest bridge model with K’NEX using the least amount of material possible and constructed in the minimum time. The new bridge is an essential element of the lifeline system used to assist the Bay Area in the event of an earthquake. For this reason, the bridge must withstand a combination of static and earthquake loads with minimal damage. In addition, the bridge should be constructed in the minimum time possible to reduce costs and disruption to the Bay Area population.
- Poster submission deadline: March 31, 2013
- Conference dates: May 20-23, 2013
- Conference location: Oakland, CA
