The Bam (Iran) Earthquake of December 26, 2003: Preliminary Reconnaissance Using Remotely Sensed Data and the VIEWS (Visualizing the Impacts of Earthquakes With Satellites) system presents an assessment of urban damage caused by the Bam, Iran earthquake of Friday, December 26, 2003. The earthquake killed tens of thousands of people and destroyed or damaged an estimated 90% of the mostly mud-brick buildings. The report also documents the first deployment of VIEWS, by the EERI reconnaissance team. VIEWS is a portable notebook-based reconnaissance system that links 60cm Quickbird satellite imagery to a real-time GPS feed. The system provides city-wide coverage, and enables the visualization of damage sustained by individual structures. It was developed under MCEER Program 3 - addressing automated methods of building damage detection using high resolution satellite imagery.
