Preliminary Report on the Changureh, Iran Earthquake
On June 22, 2002 at 7:28 a.m. local time, a MW 6.4 earthquake occurred in the northwestern region of Iran, causing significant damage and casualties to small mountainous towns and villages in the area. According to the International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IIEES), the Changureh (Avaj) earthquake was felt as far away as Tehran, approximately 180 miles east of the epicenter. The latest reports indicate that the death toll is 261, the number of injured exceeds 1,300 people, and over 25,000 people are homeless. Dr. Babak Mansouri of ImageCat, Inc. prepared a preliminary report for MCEER. Dr. Mansouri was in Iran at the time of the earthquake and the full report is available here.
