Dr.
Sabanayagam Thevanayagam, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil,
Structural and Environmental Engineering at the University at Buffalo, has
been named MCEER Director of Education.
Known as "Theva," Dr. Thevanayagam brings his keen interest and many years of experience in engineering education to this newly-created leadership position. He will work closely with the MCEER director, deputy director, diversity director, staff and researchers to implement a plan that will continue to move MCEER towards meeting its education goals in pre-college, undergraduate, graduate, professional and public-at-large areas.
His duties will include overseeing student activities, such as the Student Leadership Council, the Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program, Student Field Missions and other programs.
Theva has a strong history with MCEER, having been funded for the last seven years to engage in research and educational tasks working with graduate students on geotechnical earthquake hazard reduction for hospitals and transportation systems. He is also a co-PI of the NEES project at the University at Buffalo.
He and his wife Vasuki have two children, Shar and Abi.
