UB Students Visit Middle School
On Thursday, May 18, 2006 two UB Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering (CSEE) undergraduate students, David Keller and Charles Ekiert, visited Hamburg Middle School in Hamburg, New York to discuss earthquake engineering, after a brief overview of civil engineering, to over 250 sixth graders. The visit was coordinated by 6th grade science teacher Sherry Pfohl, who approached Dave with the idea at a CSEE open house this past semester. In addition to showing a presentation with several entertaining movie clips, Dave and Chuck displayed the model building they had used to compete with in MCEER’s Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition held this past January. The students were very attentive and enthusiastic during the visit as they asked many questions pertaining to the field of earthquake engineering as well as to the design of the towering model being displayed.
Dave and Chuck comprised the UB Undergraduate Seismic Design Team, placing first in the MCEER competition and third overall in the PEER Competition (see article).
