NEESR Program Funds Grand Challenge on
Several MCEER investigators are leading a multi-institution research team that will investigate the seismic performance of nonstructural systems. Recognizing the importance of gaining a better understanding of these systems, NSF awarded a $3.6 million Grand Challenge to a consortium of universities to study this problem in detail. Led by E. Manos Maragakis, University of Nevada Reno (UNR), the project includes a significant experimental program that will use NEES facilities at UNR and the University at Buffalo (UB).
Co-PIs are Andre Filiatrault from UB, Steve French from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Tara Hutchinson from the University of California at San Diego and Bob Reitherman from the Consortium of Universities for Research in Earthquake Engineering (CUREE). Bill Holmes from Rutherford and Chekene will lead the Practice Committee, which is a group of engineers and industry representatives that will provide input to the project’s research and implementation tasks. Other participating universities include Cornell University, North Carolina State University, North Carolina A&T University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Several industrial and international partners will participate in various phases of the project.
