The 14th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering brought more than 3,000 earthquake engineering professionals and scientists from around the world to Beijing, China from October 12-17, 2008. The Chinese venue was particularly relevant for this latest installment in a series held once every four years, given the devastating May 12, 2008 7.9 M Wenchuan earthquake, and several presentations and activities were devoted to its effects, lessons learned and recovery efforts.

Two longtime MCEER investigators gave keynote lectures: Kathleen Tierney, member of MCEER’s former Executive Committee and Director of the Natural Hazards Research and Applications Information Center at the University of Colorado, discussed the concept of disaster resilience; and Ronald Eguchi, Director of MCEER’s Remote Sensing Institute and President of ImageCat, Inc. presented recent advances in remote sensing technologies. MCEER staff members Sofia Tangalos and Jane Stoyle staffed the MCEER exhibit, which attracted many visitors during the five day event.
