Pakistani Researchers Participate in Training & Exchange Program

MCEER is conducting an intensive training program in earthquake engineering technologies and testing techniques for faculty and staff from the Earthquake Engineering Center (EEC), NWFP University of Engineering and Technology, located in Peshawar, Pakistan. The training program includes hands-on experience with the equipment in the Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory (SEESL) at the University at Buffalo. Faculty members from the EEC, Ali Syed (liaison for the EEC) and Amjad Naseer, arrived in August 2008 to participate in the program.

Connections between MCEER and the NWFP University of Engineering and Technology began shortly after the devastating 2005 earthquake in Pakistan, which killed 80,000 people. A three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the two Centers to carry out mutually beneficial earthquake engineering research. In addition to the training program, two Ph.D. students from the University of Engineering and Technology, M. Fahad and Najaf Ali, will complete studies for their doctorate degrees at UB.

Andrei Reinhorn, Professor, Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, and Mark Pitman, SEESL Technical Services Manager, are coordinating the MCEER activities.
