Recent Disaster Information Available
MCEER’s Information Service compiles news, images, videos, and statistics for recent natural disasters. The site currently includes information on the following disasters:
The Iowa-Midwest floods affected eight states, displaced 40,000 people, caused the Mississippi River to crest at 37 feet, breached over 25 levees, and cost the agriculture industry approximately $2B.
- The 2008 Atlantic Hurricane season has been abnormally active: ten named storms, two major hurricanes (Gustav & Ike) and two tropical storms (Fay & Hanna) resulting in nearly 1,000 deaths and over $45B in damages.
- The 7.9 M Wenchuan China Earthquake occurred on May 12, 2008. Casualties range from 68,000-90,000 people, almost 5 million homeless, and reconstruction costs estimated at $150B.
- Cyclone Nargis made landfall on May 3, 2008. Sustained winds of 130 mph and gusts of 150-160 mph with a 12-foot storm surge devastated the country, affecting 2.4 million people and killing 134,000.
