Seismic Design and Retrofit Best Practices Workshop Addresses Updated AASHTO Seismic Provisions
On Sunday, July 27, 2008, in conjunction with the Sixth National Seismic Conference on Bridges and Highways, the Federal Highway Administration sponsored a workshop on Best Practices for Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges. Over 85 structural and geotechnical engineers attended the workshop. Reggie Holt, FHWA, served as the workshop facilitator. Other instructors for this day-long event included Derrell Manceaux, FHWA; Lee March, Berger Abam; Ian Buckle, University of Nevada-Reno; Roy Imbsen, Consultant; Reggie DesRoches, Georgia Institute of Technology; and Anoosh Shamsabadi, Caltrans.
Two major changes to the seismic design of highway bridges, recently approved by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), were presented and discussed in detail. The first updates seismic provisions in the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (Force Based Design Approach), and the second adopts a new Guide Specification for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design (Displacement Based Design Approach). Other topics included guidelines and procedures presented in the recently updated Seismic Retrofitting Manual for Highway Structures.
