Quake Summit 2011 Concludes; Over 325 Attend the NEES-MCEER Annual Meeting

Julio Ramirez

Julio Ramirez, NEES Operations Director & NEEScomm Center Director, welcomed attendees to Quake Summit 2011.

Over 325 earthquake engineers, hazards researchers, students and educators gathered in Buffalo, New York, to discuss resilience against earthquakes and multiple hazards at Quake Summit 2011 - Earthquake & Multi-Hazards Resilience: Progress and Challenges. The meeting, held June 9-11, 2011, was a combination of the annual meetings of the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) and MCEER.

Sofia Tangalos, Senior Program Officer for MCEER Information Service, manages the MCEER booth at Quake Summit 2011.

Thursday evening’s opening plenary session, organized by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), focused on lessons learned from the 2011 February earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, and the March 11 Tohoku, Japan earthquake and tsunami. Plenary sessions on Friday showcased two NEES projects and Saturday’s session featured a panel discussion on the future of earthquake engineering.

Quake Summit 2011 Poster Session

The well-attended poster session and reception offered students a chance to network with NEES and MCEER investigators, industry partners, and fellow graduate students from around the country.

Graduate students had an opportunity to network with faculty, industry practitioners and each other through an evening Poster Session and daylong Student Symposium. Over 100 students from 15 states and Canada participated in the events, which were jointly organized by MCEER, NEES, the EERI Student Leadership Council, University at Buffalo Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering Graduate Student Association (UBCSEE- GSA), and the University at Buffalo Student Chapter of EERI.

A recap of the event, including PDFs of over 100 presentations, is available online at http://mceer.buffalo.edu/quakesummit2011/.
