Report Recommends Methodology to Quantify Building Seismic Performance Factors

Quantification of Building Seismic Performance Factors: Component Equivalency Methodology

Quantification of Building Seismic Performance Factors: Component Equivalency Methodology, FEMA P-795, June 2011, is now available from the Applied Technology Council (ATC) at 63-1/FEMAP-795_Report.pdf.

Prepared under the ATC-63-1 Project and funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the recommended component equivalency methodology provided in the report is a statistically based procedure for developing, evaluating and comparing test data for new components that are proposed as substitutes for selected components in a current code-approved seismicforce- resisting system.

The objective of the ATC- 63-1 project was to simplify the methodology put forth in an earlier ATC-63 Project into a format for judging the equivalency of building components, and to beta test the resulting procedure. The FEMA P-795 Methodology is based more on tested performance and includes additional guidance on testing of component behavior, where the FEMA P-695 methodology is based primarily on analysis. MCEER investigators Andre Filiatrault and Andrei Reinhorn, both from the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering (CSEE), University at Buffalo (UB) participated in the project. Filiatrault and Reinhorn also participated in the earlier ATC- 63 project, along with MCEER colleagues Professor Michael Constantinou and Post-doctoral Associate Assawin Wanitkorkul, both from UB’s CSEE. The project report, Quantification of Building Seismic Performance Factors, FEMA P-695, received the Excellence in Structural Engineering Award of Merit from the Structural Engineers Association of California in September 2011, and the Engineering Excellence Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies, California in January 2010.
