Abstract: With a goal of increasing awareness of seismic and geological hazards and to enhance the technical expertise of engineering professionals, nationally and internationally renowned experts in the bridge seismic arena have convened to provide the most current technology and innovative techniques for earthquake engineering around the world. Papers from fourteen sessions, including the following twelve different topic areas, present the latest research and practical information on earthquake engineering for bridges and highways: liquefaction and mitigation strategies; effects of near-field earthquakes on bridges; international technologies and practices; lessons learned from recent earthquakes; design and analysis of major bridges; emerging seismic design and retrofit technologies; soil-structure interaction and foundations; seismic risk assessment of highway networks; performance criteria and economic considerations; foundations and geotechnical considerations; use of innovative technologies and materials; and instrumentation and monitoring systems.
