Abstract: Two optimal control algorithms considering the time-rate of control forces are presented. The first algorithm is an extension of the traditional quadratic performance index to include a control derivative term. The resulting optimal control law is applied to seismic structures and compared to the traditional Ricatti optimal closed-loop control. The second algorithm, in addition to introducing a control derivative term in the quadratic performance index, imposes a constraint on the upper bound of the control rate. The resulting optimal control law is compared to the control law obtained in the first algorithm. It is shown that the control rate can be prespecified.
