MCEER Releases Taiwan CD with Photo Collection and  Reconnaissance Report

A major earthquake struck the island of Taiwan on Tuesday, September 21, 1999. The earthquake was epicentered near Chi-Chi in Nantou County, approximately 100 miles (160 km) southwest of the capital Taipei. The U.S. Geological Survey  estimated a magnitude of 7.6. A large number of buildings were destroyed by the temblor and the Taiwanese Ministry of the Interior reported more than 2,000 dead, and 5,276 injured.  An additional 100,000 were left homeless. 

MCEER staged a joint reconnaissance mission in the aftermath of the is earthquake with the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) at the National Taiwan.  University. The MCEER-NCREE reconnaissance effort took place October 3-5, 1999, about two weeks after the Chi-Chi event.  Based on these efforts, both a Web-Based Preliminary Post-earthquake Reconnaissance Report. and a Full-Length Reconnaissance Report on the Chi-Chi event were produced.

Complementing these earlier efforts, MCEER has now issued a CD-ROM (CD) featuring an extensive photograph collection from the 921 Chi-Chi, Taiwan earthquake, as well as the full-color, complete text of The Chi-Chi, Taiwan Earthquake of September 21, 1999: Reconnaissance Report (MCEER technical report-00-0003). 

Over 450 high quality images are included on the CD in an html file for viewing in any web browser. The images can be used in printed publications and presentations as long as proper attribution to the photographer and MCEER are given.

The Chi-Chi Reconnaissance Report on the CD is in PDF format, and requires Adobe® Acrobat®™ Reader 4.05 to view. The accompanying "ReadMe" file contains detailed information on how to use the CD.
