Proceedings from the Implementation of Earthquake Planning and Education in Schools: The Need for Change - The Role of the Changemakers

The theme of this workshop was to develop a team approach to school earthquake planning, and integrate the input and skills of school faculty and staff, parents, local disaster officials, and members of the community. A curriculum approach is described for earthquake materials spanning a variety of course offerings. Eight papers deal with general administrative approaches to school earthquake preparedness, and another seventeen describe the roles of various individuals, such as school nurses, PTA leaders, school principals, science teachers and so on, in implementing the team planning approach. Examples of curriculum materials, measures for the mitigation of nonstructural building hazards, and organizational checklists are included.
