Experimental Seismic Response of Accelerated Bridge Construction System

The MCEER project on Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) in seismic regions has several subtasks, including substructure, superstructure, connections and system performance. The objective of this research effort on the superstructure is to experimentally evaluate the dynamic and seismic response of a large scale (~1:2.4) precast concrete segmental bridge specimen designed and constructed according to ABC techniques.

The 60 ft. bridge specimen is a single span system with both of its supports overhanging at equal lengths as shown in Figure 1.

Construction was completed in mid-April 2010. The experimental testing took place at the Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory (SEESL) at the University at Buffalo using the adjacent relocatable shake tables during late April and May of 2010.
