Objective and Approach
Under Task F2-1, a detailed design plan is being developed for seismic instrumentation of
the Cape Girardeau cable-stayed bridge, which is currently under construction across the
Mississippi River between Missouri and Illinois. Task F2-1 will provide a detailed and
itemized list of hardware, and result in a solicitation from vendors with price quotes.
Under this task, the hardware for seismic instrumentation will be acquired on the basis of
the vendor quotes and turned over to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) for
installation.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) will prepare the instrumentation design, and an
independent consultant will check it, under Task F2-1. In addition the USGS, as part of
its earthquake hazard reduction program, has agreed to establish a mechanism and
appropriate agreements with MoDOT and the FHWA to maintain the instruments, retrieve,
process, and disseminate strong-motion response data following events in the future.
