A magnitude 6.6 earthquake occurred in Bam, Iran on Friday, December 26, 2003. The U.S. Geological Survey reports tens of thousands of people killed and injured in the quake, and numbers are likely to increase as aftershocks occur and more areas are searched. It is also estimated that 85 percent of the buildings in Bam have been damaged or destroyed, with comparable damage to the infrastructure.
