Haiti Earthquake 2010
Following MCEER's leadership of the United Nations’ Initial Emergency Engineering Support Unit to assess damaged structures in Haiti, the center is continuing its efforts to aid the recovering nation. MCEER, together with the University at Buffalo (UB) Office of International Education, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Quisqueya University (UniQ) in Port-au-Prince.
The MOU serves as a formal mechanism to provide immediate training in earthquake engineering and rapid building evaluation techniques, as well as develop longer-term educational programs on seismic design of buildings with a focus on adapted techniques for reconstruction, and promote academic exchange and cooperation over the next three years.
The first activity under the MOU was a seminar held May 20-22, 2010 in Port-au-Prince on the UniQ campus. The seminar is the first in a series that aim to help Haitian engineers gain knowledge of fundamental earthquake engineering principles for retrofit of damaged facilities and design of new construction. It was developed with an understanding of current Haitian construction practices. Read more about the UniQ-UB/MCEER Earthquake Engineering Seminar Series.
