The older bridge shown in Figure 1, which according to local sources was built
in the early 1900’s, was retrofitted with a new concrete deck in 2001.
The bridge runs almost parallel to Interstate 10, and was subjected to similar
forces, but did not fail. It is speculated that the rehabilitation project
made the deck continuous over the piers, which may have prevented spans from
becoming displaced and collapsing into the water. It remained open for use
by emergency vehicles following the hurricane.
