The Singing River Hospital shown in Figure 1 is located in Pascagoula, MS on the 2800 block of Denny Ave (US 90). The area surrounding this hospital did not appear to be damaged by Hurricane Katrina as other areas closer to the shore and west. However, the hospital building suffered some nonstructural damage as shown in the lathe-and-plaster soffit of the main entrance canopy shown in Figure 2. Additionally, glass was missing from the exposed light metal nonstructural framing shown in Figure 3, though there were no signs of glass debris nearby. OSB and plywood sheets were placed on the inside of the framing in this area while most other doorways were completely sealed around the exterior. The boards, particularly on the exterior, appear to have been placed before the hurricane. Other damage to the hospital appears to be a few broken windows on the backside of the hospital as shown in Figure 4. The hospital remained in operation through and after the hurricane with the assistance of generators for power. Staff at the hospital reported that during the hurricane, they had to scramble to move patients out from rooms with broken windows.
