The Preliminary Damage Reports for Health and Environmental Issues focus on community water and wastewater treatment, household water management, and hygiene issues. The impact on environmental infrastructure and public health is very large. Over 13 million people were without drinking water after the two storms, 5 million in Louisiana alone. In addition, 800 wastewater treatment systems were impacted (317 in Louisiana). To examine the impact in greater detail, the team is conducting interviews with responsible environmental and public health officials, as well as with Louisiana residents affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
