MCEER Response: Kocaeli Turkey Earthquake, August 17, 1999

f6-3.jpg (38962 bytes)Early in the morning on Tuesday, August 17, 1999, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck along the Anatolian fault in the northwestern region of Turkey.   Within days, MCEER dispatched a number of researchers to the region -- several of them as part of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) reconnaissance team -- to examine the earthquake's impacts.  Preliminary reconnaissance results are presented below.
