The working group IEEE 693 Fall 2008 meeting addressed seismic design practices for substations.

Members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Working Group IEEE 693, held their fall 2008 meeting at the University at Buffalo on October 22-23. The group focused its attention on the IEEE 693 standard for “Recommended Practice for Seismic Design of Substations.” More than 40 participated in the meeting, which was hosted by UB’s Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, its Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory (SEESL), and MCEER. Professors Andre Filiatrault and Andrei Reinhorn took part in the meeting and led participants on a tour of UB’s SEESL, home to numerous qualification tests and studies on the seismic performance of electric power substation equipment. Many IEEE 693 members stayed to participate in the October 24 MCEER Workshop on “Improving Earthquake Response of Substation Equipment," co-sponsored by the Bonneville Power Administration and California Energy Commission, and also held at the University at Buffalo.
