MCEER Workshop focuses on “Improving Earthquake Response of Substation Equipment”
MCEER, with sponsorship from the Bonneville Power Administration and the California Energy Commission, is holding a workshop entitled “Improving Earthquake Response of Substation Equipment,” Friday, October 24, 2008, at the University at Buffalo.
The purpose of the workshop is to engage electric power utility representatives, substation equipment manufacturers, and consultants, to solicit their input to help direct MCEER’s Research and Development Plan for advanced methods for protecting substation equipment. The research program is funded jointly by Bonneville Power Administration and the California Energy Commission, and is scheduled to commence later this year.
Nearly 30 workshop participants will share their expertise with the research team and provide comment on a draft R&D plan. Specifically, participants will help identify issues effecting performance of substation equipment during earthquakes, provide perspectives on the use of advanced damping and isolation technologies to improve equipment performance, and contribute their experience and insights on problems caused by interaction of substation equipment during earthquakes.
In addition, the workshop will convene a project advisory committee that will provide continuing guidance to the MCEER research program.
Workshop co-chairs are Andrei M. Reinhorn, from the University at Buffalo, and Anshel Schiff, a consultant, from Los Altos Hills, California. They are joined on the workshop steering committee by MCEER Director, Andre Filiatrault, from the University at Buffalo, and Leon Kempner, of the Bonneville Power Administration.
Several attendees are members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Working Group IEEE 693, which held their fall 2008 meeting October 22-23. Hosted by UB's Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, the Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory (SEESL), and MCEER, the meeting addressed the IEEE 693 standard for "Recommended Practice for Sesimic Design of Substations."
