SLC Retreat at University of Nevada, Reno

The fifth annual MCEER SLC retreat was hosted by the Department of Civil Engineering at University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), on September 30th through October 2nd, 2004. The annual retreat provides an opportunity for SLC members to discuss current issues and future activities, present their research and receive feedback from other students in an informal manners.

An icebreaker event was held at Siena Hotel Spa Casino on Thursday evening, where the hosting SLC members, Elliott Goodwin and Phil Butler, greeted arrving students. The meeting began on Friday morning at UNR Department of Civil Engineering with opening remarks by Jeffrey Berman, the current SLC chairman. Following his remarks, Jeffrey introduced Dr. Manos Maragakis, a Professor and Chair of the UNR Department of Civil Engineering, who welcomed the MCEER SLC members. This was followed with a tour to the new George E. Brown Jr., Network for Engineering Simulation (NEES) facilities at UNR, and the morning session was then closed by discussions led by Jeffrey Berman regarding SLC activities for the coming academic year, with highlight on “The Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition.”

Student Leadership Council Retreat Participants at UNR Mackay Stadium

 

A distinguished speaker, Dr. M. Saiidi, a Professor in the UNR Department of Civil Engineering, commenced the afternoon session with a presentation on the seismic retrofit of bridge structures, which received a round of applause for his presentation. While the SLC members enjoying their lunch, the afternoon session continued with student presentation. Each student has ten minutes to present their research, and five minutes for questions. The presentation covered various topics from this year twelve participants representing six different universities supported through MCEER funding.

Student presentations were given by: Navid Allahverdi (New Jersey Institute of Technology), Michael Astrella (University at Buffalo), Jeffrey Berman (University at Buffalo), Phil Butler (University of Nevada, Reno), Lyle Carden, Ph.D. (University of Nevada, Reno), Elliott Goodwin (University of Nevada, Reno), Marlon Hill (Florida A&M), Anita Jacobson (Cornell University), Terri Norton (Florida A&M), Michael Pollino (University at Buffalo), Jale Tezcan (Rice University) and Gordon Warn (University at Buffalo). Jeffrey Berman closed the afternoon sessing by providing some final remarks. The SLC members reconvened that evening for dinner at a local Brew Pub.

On Saturday, MCEER SLC gathered for a trip to Lake Tahoe, which included a BBQ and a two hour boat tour, organized by the UNR SLC students. The day was closed with a dinner and Jeffrey Berman provided closing remarks for the 2004 retreat.
