What is the MCEER Student Leadership Council (SLC)?

The Student Leadership Council (SLC) is a formal incarnation of students who are involved in research programs of MCEER, and perform research under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Since its inception, MCEER has included and encouraged student efforts throughout its research programs and in all of the disciplinary specialties concerned with earthquake engineering.

Throughout the years, students have been an integral component in advancing research in earthquake hazard mitigation. Many former students are now in academia, professional practice or government agencies applying knowledge gained during their exposure to MCEER research.

While associated with MCEER, students participate in annual center principle investigator meetings, attend conferences, workshops and seminars, with the opportunity to make presentations at these events. The SLC was formed in 1999 to formalize these activities and to afford students from many different institutions the opportunity to meet with each other and develop/improve interaction.

The SLC provides a framework in which students working on MCEER research at various MCEER affiliated institutions can meet and interact both academically and socially.  This will build “bridges” for the future and create a network of contacts for students that will become the next generation of researchers and practitioners.  Through the SLC, students are also afforded opportunities to interact with researchers other than their primary advisors as well as professionals from MCEER’s industry partners.

Furthermore, the SLC is asked to evaluate the work of MCEER every year in what is called a SWOT analysis.  NSF asks the SLC to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats to MCEER on an annual basis.  The results of the SWOT analysis are an important factor for NSF in determining whether or not MCEER will continue to receive NSF support.

Participation in the SLC is voluntary; however, it is strongly encouraged due to the benefits available for participating members, as mentioned in the following sections.
