From the Editors

The Journal of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration is a new English language journal published by the Institute of Engineering Mechanics (IEM) of the China Seismological Bureau, in Harbin, China, in collaboration with the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER), University at Buffalo, State University of New York, United States. The primary objective of this journal is to promote scientific exchange between Chinese and international scientists by introducing pertinent results of research and practice in China to the international earthquake engineering community; and informing researchers and practitioners in China about recent international developments in earthquake engineering and engineering vibration.

To accomplish this objective, the journal aims to attract a balanced number of papers between Chinese and international authors. It includes both peer-reviewed and invited papers, which address state-of-the-art knowledge and practice with overlapping interest between China and the international community. The journal is issued twice a year, in paper and electronic forms, with appendices in electronic form only.

As the Journal enters its second year of publication, we are pleased that our contributors include authors from Japan, Korea, Italy, and Turkey, in addition to the U.S. and China. We have made a substantial effort to ensure that non-native English speaking authors present their ideas in a clear and correct manner by professionally editing each submission. Finally, we are proud that our efforts have achieved recognition in several prominent sources of information including Earthquake Engineering Abstracts, Georef, Geotechnical Abstracts, International Civil Engineering Abstracts, Quakeline, and the Transportation Research Information Service.

We thank the managing editors, Dr. Jianguo Xiong and Ms. Jane Stoyle, for their fine effort and commitment to the success of the Journal. We also thank the contributing authors for offering us their outstanding knowledge in the field of earthquake engineering and engineering vibration. We sincerely welcome potential authors to join us in this new forum of technical information exchange. It is our hope to improve the practice of earthquake hazards mitigation, preparedness and recovery throughout the world, to achieve our goal of developing earthquake resilient communities.
