Route 11 Bridge over Lake Pontchartrain
Near Slidell, Orleans Parrish, Louisiana

The older bridge shown in Figure 1, which according to local sources was built in the early 1900’s, was retrofitted with a new concrete deck in 2001. The bridge runs almost parallel to Interstate 10, and was subjected to similar forces, but did not fail. It is speculated that the rehabilitation project made the deck continuous over the piers, which may have prevented spans from becoming displaced and collapsing into the water. It remained open for use by emergency vehicles following the hurricane.
